Dear Parents,
We had an exciting day with Mrs. Guest! We learned so much about Canada's First People, explored new artifacts and learned about what an author is! We look forward to working with Mrs. Guest again to help us become skilled storytellers and authors. FYI Scholastic Orders are due Friday February Calendars are coming home (oldest and Only) Order forms for books written by Mrs. Guest were submitted Ms. Heagy will be away at a conference Thursday afternoon, Friday and Monday please direct queiries to Mrs. Hewitt. Our Learning: We spend time in small groups learning about the First Peoples of Canada: The Inuit, Metis and First Nations with author Jacqueline Guest. As a published author of 20 novels, Mrs. Guest highlighted the importance of doing our 'research' as 'archaeologists' 'scientists' and 'historians' to learn the facts behind what we are inspired to write about. Students learned interesting facts like "the Inuit people did not cook the meat they ate, and instead ate it raw or pemmican style' and that Metis people were among the first to use elaborate floral beadwork on many of their clothing items, that were a mix of First Nation and European styles! We learned so much through this exciting and informative hands on experience. In Math Ms. Heagy's group explored the "Bridging Through Ten" mental math strategy, and Mrs. Hewitt's group continues to work with two digit numbers and patterns. In Literacy, students were encouraged to being taking risks and exploring their own personal style when working in their Visual Journal. Upcoming:
